There are many breeds that can be prone to eating things not meant to be eaten and unfortunately Bloodhounds are one of those breeds. Bloodhounds are extremely scent driven, they are a dog attached to a nose. They are curious by nature and sometimes their curiosity can get the better of them. They can be known as “garburators” and are notorious for swallowing all types of things.
Over the years I have heard of many Bloodhounds that have eaten a wide variety of objects; socks, rocks, mulch, sticks, towels, blankets, stuffing, toys, tennis balls, plastic, the list goes on. Some of the objects will pass through the intestinal tract with no issues but other times surgical intervention is required. Although some stories can be funny, there are other stories that have very sad endings.
The first signs that your dog may have eaten something are loss of appetite, vomiting and diarrhea. Typically once they have a blockage they cannot hold water or food down, which is why it is so important to always investigate the cause of vomiting and diarrhea. A visit to your vet is in order if your dog is not back to normal within a day or two. A careful physical will be done and most times an xray of the stomach and intestines. Exploratory surgery may be necessary.
